The huge gap between the death toll and the number of people missing highlights the immense challenge facing rescuers as they push deeper into the devastated border area.

"Large numbers" of heavy machines have now reached the site in Gyirong where the Chinese border inspection complex once stood, along with equipment to reinforce search operations, says state broadcaster CCTV.

Singapore will also deliver humanitarian assistance comprising both civilian and Singapore Armed Forces supplies to Nepal, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the fifth day of rescue efforts, 2,502 people in Nepal remain missing while 546 people in China's Tibet remain unaccounted for.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that of the 546 people missing, 261 were foreign nationals, including 104 from Nepal, 49 from India, 33 from Latvia, and 18 from the United States.
