Beyond the camaraderie and bonhomie that builds among fighter pilots over the risks and thrills of high intensity operations and professional excellence, it was a lovable black Labrador that came in as a stress buster and added an emotional bond amongst personnel from different countries at Exercise Pitch Black – 2026, hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) at its Darwin air base.

For many personnel participating in RAAF’s premier international air combat exercise, one of the most memorable ambassadors of partnership has been Connie, the welfare dog. Accompanied by Chaplain Amanda Campbell and Chaplain Darren Loechel, Connie has been a welcome presence across the exercise, offering moments of comfort and connection for personnel from 21 participating nations, a post of Australian defence ministry’s website said.
