China has pressured Nepal over the upcoming 17th Seminar of the International Association for Tibetan Studies in Kathmandu, prompting the Central Tibetan Administration to withdraw its researchers from formal participation. The conference is scheduled for August 23–29 and is expected to bring more than 700 scholars from about 39 countries. According to the International Campaign for Tibet, Chinese Ambassador Zhang Maoming raised concerns with Nepal’s foreign secretary about possible criticism of China and support for Tibet. The report said Beijing is using its new Ethnic Unity and Progress Law to extend control over Tibetology and international discussions about Tibet.
