Five Tibetans From Minnesota, Including 82-Year-Old, Begin 400-Mile Walk for a Free Tibet
Five Tibetan activists, including 82-year-old Dorjee Gyalpo, began a more than 400-mile "Peace Rally for Free Tibet" from St. Paul, Minnesota, to the Chinese Consulate in Chicago on August 5, aiming to amplify the final appeal of late Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen, who self-immolated outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York on July 2. The walkers are expected to reach Chicago on August 19, marking the 49th day since Lobga Rangzen's death, a spiritually significant period in Tibetan Buddhism. The oldest participant had previously taken part in an indefinite hunger strike for Tibet, underscoring his decades-long commitment to the Tibetan freedom movement. The march seeks to draw attention to China's continued repression and occupation of Tibet, including restrictions on religion, language, education, and fundamental freedoms. See less
