A large number of Tibetans gathered in Chandigarh on August 10 as part of the Tibetan Youth Congress’s global China protest campaign, condemning China’s occupation of Tibet and its policies aimed at assimilating Tibetan culture, language and national identity. The protest also expressed solidarity with late Tibetan independence activist Lobga Rangzen, who self-immolated in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York. The protest was jointly organised by the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC) units of Paonta Sahib, Puruwala and Chandigarh, along with the Regional Tibetan Women’s Association (RTWA). Protesters called for an end to China’s repressive policies in Tibet and urged the international community and India to stand in support of the Tibetan people’s rights, freedom and distinct cultural identity.
