Tibetan activists shaved their heads outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, urging the world to respond to China’s policies in Tibet. The protest followed the self-immolation of Pawo Lobga Rangzen, who set himself on fire outside the UN on July 2 while calling attention to Tibet’s struggle. Protesters said the UN and international community cannot remain silent as China’s Ethnic Unity and Progress Law takes effect and Tibetan identity, language, culture, and religion face growing restrictions. The demonstrators called for international action, justice for Rangzen, and greater attention to the Tibetan people’s rights.
